During this project:
I conducted user interviews to understand the target demographic's music listening habits and motivations for subscribing to a musicstreaming service.
I created a visual brand identity, designed the logo, and developed a design system for the mobile app.
I A/B tested two options, measuring conversion rates, ease of use, and quality of features.
I created user flows, designed mid-fidelity wireframes and interactive prototypes in Figma and tested the final designs with users, increasing conversion rates by 50%.
SLCTR is a music streaming app that allows users to become their own DJs making seamless mixes using machine-learning to create playlists with smooth DJ style transitions based on user inputs and listening habits.
The brand name comes from dancehall culture, where the term “selecta” or “selector” refers to a DJ who selects tunes for a party or gathering.
The logo represents a vinyl disc used on classic DJ turntables. The font for the logo, Proxima Nova, was chosen because the “C” shape allowed for a near-perfect circle, representing the hole in the center of a vinyl record.
The “L” in the logo extends to meet the edge of the “disc,” representing a tonearm needed for a record player needle to find the record's groove. The “T” is also extended downward to provide balance to the logo, touching the outer edge of the opposite side of the disc.
SLCTR’s color palette is drawn from the colors represented on a traditional DJ turntable. With a dark UI, the primary color is a bright yellow to represent excitement, joy, warmth and energy.
To reflect the brand’s most prominent feature, blending playlists, there are a number of blended color gradients represented in the app’s UI.
I chose to keep the app's typeface consistent with the logo's typeface. Proxima Nova is a modern typeface developed as a blend of Futura and Akzidenz Grotesk. The typeface is subtle and readable, contrasting the dynamic visuals of album artwork and colors on screen. As a typeface created as a mix of two other typefaces, it is visually aligned with the theme of the product.
The imagery in the SLCTR app incorporates a combination of pictures of young, happy, diverse, music listeners and album art into its interface.
DJ switchboards and vinyl album record covers inspired the UI elements.

Through competitive analysis, 15 user interviews, and A/B testing, I developed a free and premium version of a music streaming mobile app with novel features to pinpoint features and freemium sign-up flows that effectively converted users from their current platforms.
Below are the features I developed. Throughout he duration of the project, from the initial design to the finished product, conversion rates increased by %80.
SLCTR allows users to import their current music libraries so they don’t need to start over. The SLCTR algorithm will build recommendations based on music in users current libraries.
Available only in Premium
Rationale:
100% of users interviewed expressed concerns around having to recreate their playlists on a new platform. They already put effort into teaching one algorithm their taste, they didn't want to have to re-do their work.
Influenced by style elements of Spotify and Soundcloud, SLCTR allows you to listen to your playlists in a DJ style mix with smooth transitions. Great for parties, casual hangouts, studying, road trips, or working out.
Available in both free (with ad breaks) and premium ad-free.
Users do not want their music interrupted. Users sometimes use their own playlists for hosting parties or, as one user said, "a soundtrack to my life."
Young users expect a high amount of personalization in their music streaming apps. They enjoy apps that can introduce them to music and curate music based on their taste. In SLCTR users can choose any combination of musical elements and SLCTR's AI DJ create a playlist for them.
One SLCTR generated playlist available for free. Unlimited playlists generated with Premium.

Our experience of music is subjective. Users expressed categorizing their music by their mood and what they're doing. SLCTR allows users to create and apply customizable tags to albums, songs, and playlists to make filtering & organizing your library easier.
Available in both free and premium.

SLCTR allows users to stay current on upcoming concerts, music releases, and exclusive merch by following their favorite artists in their “Following” feed. Users can see what their friends are listening to & create live listening sessions to sync up their music listening to study, work out, or have a silent party with their friends.
Rationale:
80% of user interviewed shared that they looked to friends for music recommendations. They also mentioned wanting to follow their favorite artists to stay up to date on new music and concerts.
